RHINOS & LIONS

 This is an Abomination

Rhinos are being slaughtered, butchered, murdered 

It shines a light on the human condition. We (or at least the people I know), all know about Earth's spiral into ecological decay, we listen to blogs, social media posts, books, interviews and TV programmes telling of the horrors of poaching and the dire consequence for species such as rhino and lions which are barrelling towards extinction. We understand how critical the situation is and we detest what we see. We sign petitions, wave banners and we press the anger emoji response over and over again. We even cry on our significant other's shoulder. We live in a world in which wrong is wrong and a wake up call wakes you up. 

We can not see, never mind understand, that for every one of us, there are 7 indifferent people, 3 scoffers and 1 killer. 

Right at this very moment, as you read this, a rhino is being slaughtered. Last night whilst you cooked dinner a rhino was sliced up. This morning when you took the kids to school, a rhino was being butchered. Tonight while you order that pizza delivery.....

This is an abomination!

We sit in our clean kitchens and cry about the bush meat trade. We shop for imported items online that travel here on ships whose outbound cargo has bled its African blood on our soils. There is no double standard for the abomination is infinite in nuanced shades of circumstance and moral codes. What is acceptable and to whom. The why and the when. The cultural norms. The degree of hunger driving the desperate decider. 

To me it is an abomination. To slaughter a rhino, a lion, a whale, giraffe, python or a human pride. I accept that I cannot understand what drives those seven indifferent people, the 3 scoffers and my counterpart killer. But right now inside of my one heart, I carry piercing sadness.

Let me tell you about Carl... On a walk in the mountain Looking out over the valley Would I be prepared to take a lion cub of approximately 7 weeks of age who was a pet to a woman who could not deal with this lion as it turned out that he scratched and he bit? On July 12th 2016 he was transported to a farm an hour away from me and 3 hours away from where he lived. He traveled in a cat box (domestic cat size). I arrived at the meeting point and lifted him out of his box, I snuggled him into my arms and told him, 'don't you worry little one, I've got you'. INSPIRED BY A LIONESS

5 YEARS WITH MELA (Lockdown Day 4) “Mela Bella baby lion” I call and wait a few seconds as I do not know where she is in her enclosure. A bush begins to shake and I look towards it as she bursts out of the leaves running to me. She is licking her lips and mewling in short whao whao moans. Mela was born on the 29th March 2015. It was a Sunday and I was in Johannesburg having my broken arm attended to (That is another whole story involving a fractured cheek and other miscellaneous breaks).
